Prepare to be part of a historic event as the original watercolor artwork, a rare gem created by Thomas Taylor for the 1997 blockbuster film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, goes under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York on June 26. This unique piece, expected to fetch a record-breaking price, was the catalyst for a literary phenomenon that captivated the world, selling over 120 million copies and being translated into 85 different languages. The cover art, with an estimated worth of $600,000, was the beacon that launched a series of sequels, amassing a staggering 500 million copies in total.

An ambitious high estimate of £25,000 (which is comparable to around $31,000) was placed on the similar piece of Potter memorabilia that was sold at the auction held in 2001 at Sotheby’s London. However, the item sold for £85,750, which is equivalent to more than $107,000 in today’s money. At Heritage Auctions in Dallas in 2021, an unsigned first edition of Philosopher’s Stone sold for $421,000, which was the highest price ever paid for any item linked with the series at the time.

Taylor’s complex drawing, which depicted everything from a lightning-shaped scar and a striped scarf to the Hogwarts Express engine on platform 9 and a half, was in the possession of Rodney P. Swantko, an oral surgeon who died away in 2022. Authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are not even being considered for inclusion in this auction.

“It is exciting to see the painting that marks the very start of my career, decades later and as bright as ever!” said the artist. “It takes me back to the experience of reading Harry Potter for the first time—one of the first people in the world to do so—and the process of creating what is now an iconic image. As I write and illustrate my own stories today, I am proud to look back on such magical beginnings.”

When compared to the artist’s previous best, which was an illustration of a wizard that would have been featured on the cover of Stone Serpent and cost more than fifteen thousand dollars, the new work not only beats the record for material connected to Harry Potter, but it also completely destroys the prior best.

In addition, one of the seven original manuscripts for Rowling’s unreleased fairy tale collection, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which was released in 2007, will be available for purchase, giving readers a little bit more insight into the story. Friends who played a vital part in the publication of the Harry Potter books were the recipients of the seven manuscripts that they wanted to send to them. In the past, this book was owned by the English publisher Barry Cunningham, who is well-known for publishing Philosopher’s Stone and signing J.K. Rowling.

In order to provide fans of Rowling and Potter with the opportunity to have a better look at the goods, Sotheby’s New York will be putting them on display for the public between the dates of June 21 and June 25.
