The brick villa “Garden Lodge” in Kensington’s posh neighbourhood has been painstakingly preserved in its original condition since he died in 1991. The auction firm Sotheby’s revealed this on Wednesday from its Cologne, Germany, headquarters. Mercury died in London on November 24th, 1991, from pneumonia-related complications. He was 45 years old.

In September, there will be six auctions with a combined 1,500 lots. Mercury’s crown and cape from his final tour to God Save the Queen were constructed of faux fur, red velvet, and rhinestones. The handwritten lyrics to the iconic song “We Are the Champions” are another show-stopper, projected to sell for between £250,000 and £350,000 (250,000 and 339,000 euros). His collection includes a painting by James Jacques Tissot titled “Type of Beauty” from 1880, valued at between £400,000 and £600,000. This equates to €4527,000 and €678,000.

Sotheby’s London exhibition spaces will host the auction from August 4th to September 5th. The auction house says this is “the longest and most spectacular exhibition in the company’s history.” Then, London hosted three auctions on September 6th, 7th, and 8th. There will be three online auctions happening simultaneously.

Sotheby’s cited Mercury’s friend Mary Austin, who said she had the pleasure of spending many years in Mercury’s former home among all the beautiful items. But now she feels ready to put this experience behind her. She thinks Freddie Mercury’s numerous interests and talents as an artist and collector can be showcased here. No one could have convinced him otherwise than the statement, “There was nothing he loved more than an auction.”
