During the upcoming edition of Frieze London (11-15 October), eight prominent artists will be invited to select additional artists to receive solo stands in honour of Frieze London’s 20th anniversary since its debut in 2003. A section will also be devoted to women artists at Frieze Masters, the fair’s sibling event for works created before 1980.
The following will be shown in the Artist-to-Artist area of Frieze London: Deborah Anzinger (Nicola Vassell Gallery), chosen by Simone Leigh; Mark Barker (Shahin Zarinbal); Ayoung Kim (Gallery Hyundai), chosen by Haegue Yan; Fabian Knecht (Alexander Levy); Simonette Quamina (Alvaro Barrington); Vanessa Raw (Carl Freedman Gallery), chosen by Tracey Emin; Wantanee Siripattananuntakul (Gallery Ver); and Carlos Villa (Anthe A Frieze representative has stated that the arrangement of these eight booths into a distinct portion of the fair is temporary and will not be carried over to subsequent editions.
Frieze Masters, held in Regent’s Park, will rededicate itself to showcasing the work of female artists, “a task that continues to be urgent,” as the fair’s director, Nathan Clements-Gillespie, puts it. Camille Morineau, co-founder of the non-profit AWARE (Archive of Women Artists, Research, and Exhibitions), organised a group show called Modern Women in which eleven venues presented women artists in solo shows. At Almeida & Dale Art Gallery, you may see works by the important Brazilian Modernist Tarsila do Amaral, while at Perrotin, you can see works by the French sculptor Germaine Richier.
Another new addition to Masters this year will highlight the artist’s workspace, with a particular emphasis on women. Sheena Wagstaff, the former chair of Modern and contemporary art at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, curated the themed section, which has a roster of female artists such as Maggi Hambling and Mona Hatoum.
The “most international edition yet” of Frieze London, in which more than 160 galleries will be present, has been announced. London’s youthful Ginny on Frederick and Harlesden, High Street galleries, are among those debuting their participation. They’re in good company with the likes of Gagosian, Sadie Coles HQ, and Almine Rech.
