Access by Art Basel, an initiative  undertaking that facilitates charitable giving by connecting galleries, artists, collectors, and non-profit organisations via a customised digital sales experience, was unveiled by Art Basel on November 23. Access by Art Basel, an initiative developed in partnership with Arcual and debuting prior to Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, aims to support charitable donations through the sale of primary artworks within the Art Basel ecosystem. In exchange for every artwork purchase request placed during this auction, collectors will be obligated to designate an extra charitable contribution to either The Miami Foundation or The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The contribution commences at a minimum of 10% of the selling price of the artwork and is made in addition to that amount. The initial Access by Art Basel sale is scheduled to commence for the general public on Monday, November 27. Until Sunday, December 10, requests for artwork can be submitted. Art Basel Miami Beach attendees will have the opportunity to physically examine the works that are up for auction at the fair starting on Wednesday, December 6. Access-exclusive works will be identified at participating gallery booths via QR codes.

Noah Horowitz, CEO, Art Basel, said: ‘The art community is deeply engaged in the world around it. We wanted to deliver a platform that meaningfully and effectively supports the causes that matter to our galleries and their artists, while allowing them to remain the beneficiaries of 100% of the sale on artworks. Access by Art Basel connects our clients to an expanded global audience of art patrons via an easy digital platform that simultaneously streamlines the process for collectors to buy with immediate and significant philanthropic impact.’

At Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, the Access by Art Basel sale will feature more than a dozen participating exhibitors, including Pace Gallery and Francois Ghebaly, both of which will present works by artists from their respective programmes. Additionally, works by Katherine Bradford from Kaufmann Repretro, Sean Kelly, Hernan Bas, Wu Chi-Tsung, and Rafael Delacruz from Mitchel-Innes & Nash will be featured. In addition to works by Maja Ruznic at Karma, Kibong Rhee at Tina Kim, Jaider Esbell at Mendes Wood DM, Jenny Holzer at Sprüth Magers, Angel Otero at Hauser & Wirth, and Chelsea Ryoko Wong at Jessica Silverman, Luhring Augustine will acquire a piece by Mark Handforth.
By utilising the secure and user-friendly platform offered by Access by Art Basel, a personalised charitable contribution is inextricably linked to every artwork sale. Collectors will be able to peruse artworks in the sale, as well as submit and monitor requests for available artworks via their personalised profile. Additionally, collectors will be granted the opportunity to designate their preferred charitable organisation and delineate the nominal value of their donations. Upon receipt of the final payment, which is processed directly on Access, the charity and the gallery are promptly credited with their respective funds.

The collector may designate the ICRC or one of three collective impact initiatives within The Miami Foundation—Arts Access Miami, LGBTQ+ Equity Fund, or Racial Equity Fund—to receive the proceeds from this transaction. Prior to the commencement of the auction, Art Basel has allocated a lead contribution of USD 25,000, which will be split in half between The Miami Foundation and ICRC.

Arcual, a technology corporation developing the next iteration of digital infrastructure for the art world, provides the power for Access by Art Basel. Arcual, a digital platform established in 2022 by BCG X, MCH Group, and LUMA Foundation, provides a suite of tools tailored to the art community’s priorities and needs, including smart contract solutions that are fostering new standards for the art ecosystem and enhancing the security and trustworthiness of transactions and exchanges.
