Returning in 2024 with an exhibition of modern and contemporary visual art, the renowned La Biennale di Venezia (The Venice Biennale) is a must-see for art lovers. The Biennale has been around since 1895, and in that time, it has grown into a venue that displays cutting-edge work from the fields of architecture, dance, film, music, and theater, as well as the visual arts. Attracting artists, curators, collectors, critics, and art aficionados from all over the world, this legendary art event takes place every two years in Venice, Italy (another festival focusing on architecture takes place on odd-numbered years).

Participating artists and curators are guided by a central subject in each edition of the Venice Biennale. “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere” will be the topic of the 2024 edition. Adriano Pedrosa’s 60th International Art Exhibition will take place at the Giardini della Biennale and the Arsenale, two renowned art sites, this year from April 20th to November 24th.

Claire Fontaine, a collective based in Palermo, Italy, came up with a series of neon sculptures that read “Foreigners Everywhere” in an ever-growing number of languages; these sculptures serve as the inspiration for the exhibition’s title. The term was first used by a group of Turin residents who were active in the fight against racism and xenophobia in Italy around the turn of the century.

“Stranieri Ovunque” is a phrase with more than one possible interpretation. Since we, the foreigners, are present everywhere, this could be seen as a sign that you would always be close to a group of people from another country. It can also imply that you’ll never wholly belong anywhere; you’ll always be an outsider.

The central theme of “Foreigners Everywhere” is the plurality and fluidity of identities in our globally interdependent society, which poses a challenge to traditional ideas of citizenship and belonging. The Biennale provides a forum for underrepresented groups to have their opinions heard and acknowledged by highlighting the lived realities of “foreigners” – individuals who are either on the periphery of society or who occupy locations where different cultures meet.

The historic Giardini and Arsenale, chosen as settings for the Biennale, are significant because they are places of meeting and exchange. The dynamic interaction between tradition and innovation, past and present, is created by the juxtaposition of contemporary artworks inside these iconic locations. This dialogue grounds the Biennale topics in a rich historical context while simultaneously inviting investigation of the current concerns of our time.

Participating nations also have the opportunity to exhibit their artists’ work to a global audience at the Venice Biennale through their national pavilions. The Nordic Pavilion’s avant-garde installations and the architectural wonder of the British Pavilion both provide fascinating glimpses into the artistic traditions and cultural landscapes of other countries.

With collateral activities and satellite exhibitions held in galleries, museums, and public spaces around the historic city of Venice, the Biennale expands its impact beyond the central exhibition locations. During the Biennale, these performances and installations take place off-site, adding to the lively ambiance of cultural interchange that envelops Venice.

In light of the worldwide pandemic and the rise of digital technology, the 2024 Venice Biennale is taking bold new steps to connect with people all over the globe. People from all over the world can enjoy the Biennale’s programs and exhibitions through virtual tours, live-streamed events, and digital platforms that allow for remote engagement.

The Venice Biennale is more than just a gallery for modern and contemporary art; it also promotes dialogue and understanding between different cultures. The Biennale promotes public-private discourse on current concerns and future possibilities through educational programs, seminars, and panel discussions. Beyond art, the Biennale shapes more extensive discussions about society, the environment, and individual identity. The Biennale stimulates contemplation of personal and social reality as well as the possibility of collective action and change by addressing urgent global issues and challenging conventional wisdom.
